02
What should I wear?
Please wear loose - fitting clothing, or bring something to change into. There's a private area to change in, and a coat stand for your belongings.
I always get apologies for unshaven legs, dodgy fake tan and chipped nail polish - please - do not worry about these things, I just want you to be comfortable!

Needles can be used almost anywhere on the body, and the points change between treatments, but the main areas I need to reach are your arms, legs and stomach
03
Do the needles hurt?
The needles used are very fine - not like those used for vaccinations or blood tests. I choose the right size and length for you. If you find a needle too much, I can use a finer or shorter one.

It's normal to feel a dull, heavy sensation where the needle goes in, or for an arm or leg to feel a little 'asleep'. Brief tingling or electric sensations are normal too.
Occasionally a needle feels sharp as it goes in, especially if you're a little anxious, but this usually settles within about 20 seconds. Your comfort is my prime concern so we always go at your pace.
04
How often should I have treatment?
I usually recommend weekly sessions for at least your first 4 treatments - then we can review and move to fortnightly. Weekly sessions are most effective for as long as possible as acupuncture is cumulative (each session builds on the last) and we can get quicker results - but fortnightly sessions are fine - just things will build more gradually. We'll discuss it in your consultation.

During an IVF round - treatment is scheduled around the IVF clinic protocol - so weekly treatment during the round is normal.

Consistency is vital for achieving real results - because of this it is important to keep to the frequency we agree at your consultation, usually weekly or fortnightly. Of course, the odd missed session for holidays or life events is absolutely fine!

05
How long will I be in treatment for?
Because everyone responds differently and some issues are more complex than others, I can't predict the exact number of sessions needed. However, acupuncture is never meant to be an endless loop - our aim is to achieve your health goals so you can move to maintenance for chronic conditions , or to complete treatment.

Fertility patients should expect to be with me for a minimum of 4 months, as that's the minimum amount of time to make a real difference to reproductive health, including egg quality. Pregnancy can occur in that time, and you can choose to continue through the first trimester or to conclude treatment. I'll always be honest with you if I feel treatment isn't working.

You are always free to pause or stop treatment at any time, without any awkwardness or questions asked - just let me know.
06
I'm nervous and worried about coming for acupuncture
You should honestly be more worried about my poor craic than having treatment.

On a serious note, coming for acupuncture for the conditions I treat involves a lot of intimate questioning, it involves you being vulnerable with me so I can get you results.

What I can promise you, is I am non-judgmental, not much phases me and I will always treat you with kindness and empathy. Trust between us is vital.

I'm a degree qualified, licensed, regulated and supervised Acupuncturist who has been helping people for over 6 years now. I have spent 100+ hours studying fertility and working on an advanced fertility diploma, which deep dives into the more complex issues of fertility and IVF, very much above and beyond a 'generalist' acupuncturist, and if I ever don't know the answer, I find it out for both of us.

07
What are the hygiene and safety standards?
I only use pre-packaged, sterile, single-use needles. If I need to reposition a needle, I always use a fresh one. Needles are put into a sharps bin and destroyed correctly once used.

All hygiene practices are fully adhered to. I am a member of the British Acupuncture Federation and the Association of Acupuncture Clinicians - who are professional bodies in the U.K for Acupuncture and have strict codes of practice that I follow.

I am registered, licensed and inspected by Sunderland City Council, both as an Acupuncturist and the clinic premises.
08
Can I have acupuncture alongside IVF and other medication?
Yes - absolutely.
At your first consultation, I'll take details of any medication or supplements you're currently taking, so I can make sure your treatments work safely alongside it.
I work alongside your GP, fertility clinic or other healthcare providers, never instead of them.

Please always follow their instructions about your medication.

If you're having IVF, I'll ask for your treatment protocol and medication schedule, so I can plan your sessions around them.
09
How can I contact you and where do I find you?
